Self-esteem is something that is really impacted by a lot of different components such as our behaviors, the decisions that we make each day, how we care for ourselves, how we care for others, and our values. Even who we surround ourselves with has a lot to do with our self-esteem.
When people come in for a session for hypnotherapy and want to focus on self esteem issues, these are a lot of the things that we get into. I typically will ask a person questions such as: How do you take care of yourself? How do you take care of your body? How do you care for others? What are your goals in life and how are you working towards those goals? What’s your self talk? All of those things really matter when it comes to self-esteem.
I want to share a story about a client who I saw about a year and a half ago. When she came to see me, she was experiencing some depression, but it was really driven by anxiety. She had reached a point where she was so worked up about a lot of things in her life such as where to go to school, what to do with her life and how to take care of herself.
She was also hanging out with the wrong crowd. And that had a lot to do with it as well. When I first met her, I gave her a treatment for anxiety to help her with some things that she’d been putting off looking at in her life that were making her anxiety and even depression worse. We did a session or two for anxiety, and she started noticing some positive differences.
After the second session, she decided to get a different job, which she really enjoyed. That actually helped her self-esteem quite a bit- just getting into a new job with new people. When she came back for a follow-up session (about the 3rd or 4th session) she said, “Okay, I’m feeling better and less anxious about things in my life and now I want to work something different“
Now she wanted to work on how to take better care of her body. And so we did some sessions and helped her change her diet, the kinds of food she ate. And this young woman over the course of time lost 80 pounds, which is just absolutely incredible. This really impacted everything in her life, how she felt about herself, her mood, and so many other things.
She was less anxious. Her anxiety was almost gone. She was taking better care of herself. And in the process of all this, she got yet another job that she absolutely loves, decided to go back to school, and hung out with a completely different group of people. This young woman’s life has absolutely changed. As a matter of fact, she texted about a month ago and said she was just finishing up a class in college for nutrition and realized just how much her life had changed. She now wants to go to school to become a nurse. It was so exciting.
This is such a great example of the kind of things that hypnotherapy can help with in regards to self-esteem.
